THE MEANING OF PHRASAL VERBS SOMETIMES SEEMS REALLY LOGICAL.......

Like for example, put on, take off: the  preposition has a literal meaning and  we can easily imagine the meaning. However, some verbs aren't as easy as the examples.......
Let us take the example of the phrasal verb to cool down or calm down........... which seem to come from adjectives, ???????does cool down mean: become hotter  (if you imagine the coolness disappearing, you'll feel hotter, or if the calmness goes down you'll become more irritated?????????)
When you are an advanced student these are common questions and the best thing you can do is always check and check in an English-English dictionary to allow you to get the meaning in English and avoid comparing your idea with your own language. My favourite dictionary for phrasal verbs is
WordReference.com and this is how you can do it.

Step 1. Type the original verb without the preposition  in the dictionary and you get the general idea and the meaning of the verb and the phrasal verb too: This is what you get for COOL DOWN.....
.v.
  1. to (cause to) become cool:[no object]The cake cooled on the plate.[+ off]We cooled off with a quick swim.[+ object]The air conditioner cooled the room adequately.[+ object + off]The swim in the river cooled us off.[+ off + object]They cooled off the horse by pouring water on its back.
  2. to (cause to) become less excited, friendly, interested, or cordial:[no object]She cooled visibly when I invited her to my house.[+ object]Disappointment cooled whatever enthusiasm she might have had.
idiom
  1. cool down:
    • to (cause to) become cooler:[no object]The feverish child just wouldn't cool down.[+ object + down]They tried cold washcloths to cool her down.[+ down + object]to cool down the patients.
    • to (cause to) become less angry or excited; (cause to) become calm:[no object]She finally cooled down enough to talk about the fight.[+ object + down]I took him aside and cooled him down before he did anything crazy

Step 2. Now type the verb with the preposition......and look for its meaning in Spanish and you'll get this:
WordReference English-Spanish Dictionary © 2014:

SAY OR TELL?

I've noticed that most Spanish students find the use of say and tell quite difficult.
The reason is that their meaning is very similar in English but they are used in different grammatical constructions.

STEP 1: Try this exercise first to see how well you use these two verbs

STEP 2: If you've had problems, look at this interesting explanation

STEP 3: And now you are ready to repeat the first exercise again, to check if you have solved your problems and you are ready to progress a little bit more with the following activities:

Exercise 1

Exercise 2

STEP 4: I'd really be grateful to receive your comments about your experience with "say and tell" after doing the activities,

Water of love!

It's raining!

There's been a serious drought in Ibiza and today, we're all delighted to see the rain again!
Do you remember I told about the magic of music? So, today, this is the song that comes to my mind:
This time, again thanks to Mr. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits:

Dire Straits – Water Of Love Lyrics

High and dry in the long hot day
Lost and lonely every day
Got the flats all around me sky up above
I need a little water of love
I've been too long lonely and my heart feels pain
Crying out for some soothing rain
I believe I have taken enough
I need a little water of love

Water of love deep in the ground
No water here to be found
Some day baby when the river runs free
It'll carry that water of love to me

There's a bird up in a tree sitting up high
Waiting for me to die
If I don't get some water soon
I'll be dead and gone in the afternoon

Once I had a woman I could call my own
Once I had a woman now my woman is gone
Once there was a river now there's a stone
You know it's evil then you're living alone

ADVANCED COMPARATIVE EXERCISES.........

There's a beautiful expression in English with the verb to compare; if you COMPARE NOTES WITH SOMEBODY, you  talk to someone in order to find out if their experience of something is the same as yours: Leading scientists got together in Paris to compare notes on current research. (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English)...
Listening to a good friend's point of view when you need to learn lessons about life is such a gratifying experience!

So here are a few exercises:

Exercise 1 Comparative structures

Exercise 2 A common problem of advanced students is the difference between AS/LIKE

Exercise 3 THE/THE COMPARATIVE

Exercise 4 MORE PRACTICE
