INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2018; CELEBRATE AND LEARN ENGLISH!

Although the United Nations started celebrating IWD in 1978 with the International Women's Year, the first National Woman's day was observed in the United States in 1909. Today, the struggle to  achieve equal status, that is, the same position in society as men, is still going on.
Let's celebrate this date in English too with different activities:

Activity 1: Read the list of vocabulary relatid to women's rights.

Activity 2: Reading comprehension exercise: text about IWD.

Activity 3: Reading comprehension exercise: text about Women who changed the world.

Activity 4: Reading comprehension exercise: Text about women's rights in history.

READING COMPREHENSION EXERCISES FOR ALL LEVELS

Reading is a perfect way of practising grammar or vocabulary and of learning lots of interesting information.
If you need texts with different exercises to check your comprehension, here is
a web that will help you a lot from the British Council. It's useful for all levels!
You can use it for practice or even to test your level!

For example, imagine you are a beginner: Level 1-A1 on the web- , let's start with a simple text, do the exercise (use an online dictionary if you need help with the difficult vocab) and correct it.

After this you have different options:

a) if it's very  difficult: try another one from the same level to practice.

b) if it's very easy: go to the another text from another level

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

When you study the "Present Perfect simple" for the first time, you may feel a bit discouraged.
On the one hand, you must remember to combine the present of the verb to have in the correct form, on the other,   you should use the correct past participle ( is the verb regular or irregular?)   :(   :0) !
What's more, it's really difficult to remember the correct order of the words!, plus the corresponding adverbs (yet, for , since, already, just.....) so just take it easy!
Remember Bob Marley's words: Don't worry, about a thing, cause every little thing's gonna be all right!
While you are listening to the song Three little birds , read the theory and do the exercises at the bottom of the page (if you feel like a child, you can sing along with the lyrics of this video):

IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH BY READING AND WATCHING THE NEWS WITH "NEWS IN LEVELS"!

This is a great website to visit when you want to read news and  practice of all your skills at the same time.
Notice how the news articles are presented in a different way according to your level, for example
My suggestion is the following: start with: LEVEL 1 or LEVEL 2 to read and understand the text. You can even use it as a dictation exercise and repeat the sentences to improve your pronunciation!
After that, watch the video in LEVEL 3 even in you don't understand the whole text! It'll be good listening practice too.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR BOOK FOR LEVEL 1

I usually recommend this grammar book for LEVEL 1: beginners or those who have studied English but don't remember the most basic grammar items. It shows examples in short texts, there's an explanation of the rules and graded exercises, from simple to more complicated. Buy one with key so that you can correct your mistakes.
Learning English grammar is a question of patience and practice and more patience and more practice because you learn, forget, remember, forget, practice, remember.....a never ending story! but it keeps your English alive!

THE SPELLING OF THE VOWELS:A E I O U- (EI I AI O IU)

Many Spanish students tell me that they find the spelling of the vowels in English really hard, for some, they're the most difficult of the alphabet. Yesterday one of them asked me how I learnt them, and then I remembered there was a song which was incredibly famous in the 80s and repeated A-E-I-O-U in the chorus.
Listen and you'll see how easy spelling the vowels can be!
